I’ve had a variety of insects hanging out in my apartment, from those little flies that seem to come from nowhere to at least one sizable cockroach, but one bug has crawled his way into my heart:
Dirch Frode, the Rhino Beetle

Isn’t he cute?
I found him at Toys R Us, so I think it’s fair to say he’s in a different class of bug.
His namesake, Dirch Frode, is a lawyer in the book The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Right now Dirch hangs out in a plastic beetle cube under my TV stand. I plan to get him a larger cube, since the “medium” size has turned out to be too small, in my opinion. Also, I read that beetles enjoy bananas, so I have my two-item shopping list for tomorrow!
Ever since seeing rhino beetles on sale at a home center in Japan two years ago, I’ve wanted one as a pet.
On a related note, I took a bunch of rhino-beetle photos of Dirch with my cellphone camera. While using my phone during a break at Japanese class, my teacher came over, saw my phone, and declared, “Wow, you sure did take a lot of photos of your rhinoceros beetle.” I’m not going to use my phone in public any more.
Anyway, thank you for being my rhino beetle-friend, Dirch!
